ESL

We offer basic and intermediate ESL courses, which are designed for English language learners who have literacy skills in their own language appropriate to their age or grade level. Each course spans 5 months and covers the four essential language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.

These courses are useful for learners who may 1) be entering schools in Ontario 2) have recently arrived from other countries, 3) be international students who have come to the country for a limited period for the purpose of learning English in an English-speaking country or 4) have other study or work-related objectives.

ESL Basic to Pre-Intermediate (CLB levels 1 to 4)

This course is designed for those who have minimum English language proficiency. It expands students’ English language skills for essential everyday purposes. There are no pre-requisites required to enroll in this course.

COURSE OUTLINE

At the end of this course, students should be able to accomplish the following tasks using English.

Listening: 

  • Comprehend basic, brief directions, commands and greetings.
  • Comprehend descriptions of familiar people, places and topics.

Speaking: 

  • Speak English for daily personal and social purposes; e.g. introducing oneself, asking questions and greeting others.
  • Have controlled conversations on familiar, relevant topics.

Reading:

  • Extract important information from short, adapted texts on relevant topics.
  • Understand the gist of simple texts on familiar topics.

Writing:

  • Compose short, personal goodwill messages, phrases and simple sentences. 
  • Complete short notes and fill simplified forms

Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to enroll in our ESL Intermediate to Advanced course.

ESL Intermediate to Advanced (CLB Levels 5 to 8)

This course is designed for those who have pre-intermediate English language proficiency. It extends students’ skills in using English for a variety of everyday and academic purposes.

The pre-requisite for this course is completion of the ESL Basic to Pre-Intermediate Program OR valid IELTS score of 4.5 bands.

COURSE OUTLINE

At the end of this course, students should be able to accomplish the following tasks using English.

Listening: 

  • Comprehend simple to moderately complex texts on familiar and relevant topics.
  • Comprehend extended directions, instructions and oral discourse in English.

Speaking: 

  • Speak English somewhat fluently in personal, social and academic contexts.
  • Give interviews, directions, instructions, descriptions and advice.
  • Share opinions in short presentations and discussions.

Reading:

  • Understand simple, adapted and original texts on familiar topics in a variety of contexts.
  • Skim and scan for important information in moderately complex texts.

Writing:

  • Compose a cover letter and design a resume.
  • Write e-mails, summaries and simple essays.

IELTS PREPARATORY COURSE

This course is designed for those who intend to take the IELTS General Training or Academic modules. There are no pre-requisites required to enroll in this course.

At the end of this course, students should be able to use English to answer several IELTS question types including:

Listening/Reading: 

  • MCQs
  • Map labelling
  • Short notes completion
  • Sentence completion
  • Table completion
  • Diagram completion
  • Matching

Speaking: 

  • Speak with relative amount of fluency
  • Speak coherently
  • Link sentences and ideas together with grammatical accuracy

Writing:

  • Letter writing
  • Description and summarizing of graph/chart/diagram/figure, etc.
  • Argumentative essay writing
