We offer basic and intermediate ESL courses, which are designed for English language learners who have literacy skills in their own language appropriate to their age or grade level. Each course spans 5 months and covers the four essential language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.
These courses are useful for learners who may 1) be entering schools in Ontario 2) have recently arrived from other countries, 3) be international students who have come to the country for a limited period for the purpose of learning English in an English-speaking country or 4) have other study or work-related objectives.
At the Canadian Technical and Management College (CTMC), we want every student to have the tools needed to excel in their education goals. Our ESL courses strengthen your English verbal, written and reading skills so you can communicate effectively in the workplace and in your everyday life.
ESL BASIC TO PRE-INTERMEDIATE (CLB LEVELS 1 TO 4)
Designed for students with minimal English language proficiency, this course focuses on the English skills needed for everyday purposes. You will accomplish such tasks as:
Listening skills: Understanding basic, brief directions, commands and greetings, descriptions of familiar people, places, and topics
Speaking skills: Speaking English for daily personal and social purposes, including introducing oneself, asking questions and greeting others as well as have controlled conversations on a familiar, relevant topic
Reading skills: Extracting important information from and understanding the meaning of short, simple texts on familiar topics
Writing skills: Composing short, personal messages, phrases and complete sentences and writing short notes and fill simplified forms
ESL INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED (CLB LEVELS 5 TO 8)
This course is for students who have pre-intermediate English language proficiency and focuses on using English for a variety of everyday and academic purposes. The pre-requisite for this course is completion of the ESL Basic to Pre-Intermediate course or valid IELTS score of 4.5. You will accomplish such tasks as:
Listening skills: Understanding simple to moderately complex texts on familiar and relevant topics, as well as comprehend extended directions, instructions, and oral discourse in English
Speaking skills: Speaking English somewhat fluently in personal, social and academic contexts, giving interviews, directions, instructions, descriptions and advice and sharing opinions in short presentations and discussions
Reading skills: Understanding simple, adapted and original texts on familiar topics in a number of contexts and scanning for important information in moderately complex texts
Writing skills: Composing a cover letter and designing a resume, as well as writing emails, summaries and simple essays
ESL BEGINNER TO ADVANCED (CLB LEVELS 1 TO 8)
This course combines all the modules listed above and is designed for students who want comprehensive English language instruction.
